While it may appear(i) ________ the related concept, 'theme', the term 'motif' differs somewhat in usage.

X and Y are identical. However, they differ somewhat

If the word was "similar " to, implicitly they already differed somewhat and we would not have the highlighted portion at the end of the sentence
