In this question why cant we have debate in Blank(i)
I justified myself that one can lose in a debate, causing debacle, However, not because of the failure of a dialogue

A debate has no failure as a debate has no objective.

Dialogue can fail, negotiations can fail.

One cannot fail a football match or lose an exam.

Can't a conference fail if it has no attendees or very low turnout?

In this case, it is more a flop than a real fail.

Maybe the point addressed was good at the conference but we do not know because of zero participants.

But is not a fail per se

No, you can not say that a conference has failed.
Conference cannot fail in itself, it can fail to deliver some objective...
say "responsibility for the failure of conference to deliver the desired result"

so 'in itself', it will be the dialogue that will fail

I'm questioning the quality of the question because I believe that there is no solid answer for the third blank. Though in common sense it is the acrimony that made this debacle, either modesty or skill can be the reason for the failure as well depending on the characteristics of the dialogue. The quality of the first blank seems quite clever though.

You are right. However, not all the time the official material has a clear-cut among the answer choices.

Look this question https://gre.myprepclub.com/forum/since-she ... html#p6323

B is very very close and tempting but is wrong. it has a strong argument.

But what you are saying makes sense.

@edit

looking at the middle part of the sentence

he had no right to (ii) absolve himself. Which means that he was guilty and for a very good reason

it was his (iii) ________ that caused the debacle.

His bitterness or ill feeling (acrimony) was the only reason for the failure.

Skill and modesty are clearly out of scope.

Often a dialogue fails because we are ill-prepared or too emotional. Often skills or modesty are not implied if not in small amount.

I thought that a debate could some of the parties fails and the other be more convincing.
May someone clarify? because the above isn't convincing

A debate is an exchanging of opinions or thoughts or whatever it is right or wrong.

However, the sentence talks about absolving and acrimony.

These elements pends toward the dialogue NOT a debate.

Dialogue is something more related to the persons.
