Cos She is making fun and hence the clue-"a nugget of pure truth" to wrap up between the pages of one's notebook and keep on the mantelpiece forever.

therefore C and D--

"To make light of" essentially means to mock or not take something seriously

Answer has to be C & D , Major Giveaway in the question is W's thought of Hardly gaining any truth to be wrote down or remembered , So it has to be something She fails to give any Heed or Value.

Other Options infer the Opposite meaning.

Well, not really. There is not a proper clue word/s to predict the answer. The only way is to grasp the meaning of the sentence as a whole.

Woolf ____________ conventional notions of truth: in her words, one cannot receive from any lecture "a nugget of pure truth" to wrap up between the pages of one's notebook and keep on the mantelpiece forever.

From this, you can infer that the real meaning is she plays with the truth and that this truth is always somehow changing.

I.E she plays with the standard truth. The standard truth (whatever it means) you take for granted and cast in stone.

She instead mocks (has a joke) of the truth. The akin word to pair with mock is makes light of.

Hope now is more clear to you.

Regards

Hi There!

It is not that a non native speaker will not get what the author is trying to say. Rather it is the understanding of every individual and the way you comprehend the sentence.

Woolf ____________ conventional notions of truth: in her words, one cannot receive from any lecture "a nugget of pure truth" to wrap up between the pages of one's notebook and keep on the mantelpiece forever.

Clues: the ":" in the sentence means that the other half part is explaining the first half. And from the statement, we know Woolf does not support the conventional view. Thus we need something which says does not support

anticipates- OUT
articulates- To say something clearly- OUT
makes light of- Hold
mocks- Hold
pays heed to- pays attention- Nope- OUT
puts up with- To accept or continue- OUT

None of the other word except C & D fits.

Let me know if any further questions!

Hope this helps

(C, D) The second clause presents an example of literary mockery or sarcastic jesting. The abstract idea of preserving a nugget of pure truth is appealing; the concrete example of setting it up on the mantelpiece makes light of or mocks the whole idea.
