The argument above rests on which of the following assumptions?

(A) The residents of Pandora County used to have more free time 30 years ago than they do now. Incorrect

not related with book sales, but support argument

(B) The residents of Pandora County have many more activities that vie for their attention today than 30 years back. Incorrect

support argument

(C) The population of Pandora County hasn’t increased significantly in the last 30 years. Correct

population has not increased so much that of 30 years ago, so people must buying less books than 30 years ago

(D) The literacy rate hasn’t significantly changed in Pandora County over the past 30 years. Incorrect

irrelevant

(E) Those residents of Pandora County who used to read 30 years ago have now not become too old to read. Incorrect

Re: 30 years ago residents of Pandora County used to buy an aver [#permalink]
We are just told that the average books bought in a town has decreased and the conclusion is that book sales fell. However notice that we are given the average rate of buying, which is nothing but no. of books bought/population.

A- Free time doesn't affect the average.
B- Attention doesn't affect the average.
C- Yes, this is the assumption because if population HAS increased significantly, that can decrease the average.
D- Literacy rate has no bearing on average.
E- Trap answer in my opinion seeing as less people are reading but 'those residents' is restrictive when talking about a general average.

Thanks.
