A bag of n peanuts can be divided [#permalink]
1
Sir, if you choose 15 & 16, the multiplication will be 240
and when divided by 18, 6 will be left. (we need bags of 18 peanuts )

While in your calculation, the remainder is 1 as you reduced the fraction by dividing with 6. So in the end you need to multiply by 6. As in yours, total are 40 peanuts with the bag of 3.

Take m = 4 & n = 6 :: mn = 24 now we need to make bag of 18 so 6 will be left.

So in algebra, it is good to make an equation, as these small errors can be neglected.

R

A bag of \(n\) peanuts
9 smaller bags with 6 peanuts left over - take the no of smaller bags \(x\)

\(n = 9x + 6\)

A bag of \(m\) peanuts
12 smaller bags with 4 peanuts left over - take the no of smaller bags \(y\)

\(m = 12y + 4\)

\(mn = (9x+6)(12y+4)\)

= \(108xy + 36x + 72y + 24\) = \(108xy + 36x + 72y + 18\) + 6

When divided by 18 , 6 will be left over

Answer C

You didn't answer my question, rather you solved it the by algebra .
