An empty swimming pool with a capacity of 5,760 gallons is filled by a pipe at the rate of 12 gallons per minute. There is an emptying pipe which, in 9 hours, can empty the pool, which is 3/4 full. How many hours does it take to fill the pool, which is already half filled, if both the pipes are kept open?

Option B.
Rate of filling = 12 gallons per minute
Rate of emptying: Water in the pool = 5760 * 2/4 = 4,320 gallons Time taken to empty = 9 * 60 = 540 minutes --> Rate = 4320/540 = 8 gallons per minute
If the pool is half-full, the remaining work is 5760/2 = 2,880 gallons Combined rate = 12 - 8 = 4 gallons per minute --> Time taken = 720 minutes or 720/60 = 12 hours
