Fifteen years ago, Omega University implemented a new procedure that encouraged students to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of all their professors. Since that time, Omega professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes, and overall student grade averages at Omega have risen by 30 percent. Potential employers, looking at this dramatic rise in grades, believe that grades at Omega are inflated and do not accurately reflect student achievement; as a result, Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University. To enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should terminate student evaluation of professors.
Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.
Your Argument Response
The author states that Omega university implemented a procedure 15 years , procedure involved evaluation teaching effectiveness . According to the author following were the outcomes of this implementation.
1- Professors begin assigning 30% higher grades on average.
2-Potential employers begin to give jobs to graduates of other institutes due to this inflation of grades.
So the author is of opinion that this procedure should be rolled back so as to enable graduates to get employed. Though the author might have a strong point but much more information is required to reach this conclusion than what author has presented.
Firstly, author does not give any evidence as to how he reached the conclusion that the overlooking by employers is due to the inflation of grades, as there can be a host of different reason for that, like the decline in actual academic performance and lack of skill required for the job. So one way to resolve this would be to survey and study the market so as to know what actual reasons are for not employing Omega University graduates.
Secondly 15 years is a long time , perhaps the quality of students has not been the same as it used to be . As real life reason for employment is skill not degree if graduates are lacking specific skills then they would not be able to impress the potential employers. So there is much need for evidence of quality of graduates and their comparison with that of 15 years seniors. Also there is need for looking into quality of freshmen as they directly effect the quality of graduates
Thirdly, in 15 years academia can change a lot making many things obsolete adding many new things as absolute requirement for success. This requires constant upgradation of curriculum and faculty. As this can be the reason for employers not hiring graduate of Omega University as being up to date is most important requirement for surviving in modern workplace.
Though the increase of 30% sounds a lot and might be an actual problem but author does not give us enough evidence or reason to believe that it is indeed the reason for decline in acceptance of graduates in market. Author needs to collect evidence regarding real concerns of employers, quality of graduates and freshmen compared of 15 years ago and quality of faculty and curriculum. Then only the author can claim that the new procedure the (or not the) cause of decline employment of graduates.
