If the range of the set of numbers \({150,90,125,110,170,155,x,100,140}\) is 95 which of the following could be x?
A)80 B)85 C)95 D)125 E)185
src: orbit test prep
First arrange the known values in ascending order to get: {90, 100, 110, 125, 140, 150, 155, 170} The range of these values (without the x) = 170 - 90 = 80
We want the range to equal 95 So, EITHER x is less than 90 OR x is greater than 170 Also, since we want the range to increase from 80 to 95 (a 15-point difference), we want x to be EITHER 15 less than 90 OR 15 greater than 170
Check the answer choices....E is greater than 170
Answer: E
If we want to confirm this, just add 185 (answer choice E) to the set to get: {90, 100, 110, 125, 140, 150, 155, 170, 185} Range = 185 - 90 = 95 WORKS!

Theory: Range of a set is the difference between the highest and lowest value of the set. (Arrange the numbers in ascending or descending order to make the process easier)
The range of the set of numbers \({150,90,125,110,170,155,x,100,140}\) is 95 Let's arrange all the numbers except x in ascending order, we get 90, 100, 110, 125, 140, 150, 155, 170 Current range is 170 - 90 = 80 But it is given to us that Range is 95 => Either x is smaller than 90 or greater than 170
Case 1 x is smaller than 90 So, 170 - x = range = 95 => x = 170 - 95 = 75 Which is not an option choice so let's try case 2
Case 2 x is greater than 170 So, x - 90 = range = 95 => x = 90 + 95 = 185
So, answer will be E Hope it helps!
