Every issue has its own positive and negative ramifications, and whether schools should be responsible for teaching ethical and social values is no exception. I do believe that schools should be responsible for teaching ethical and social values, as schools play an integral part during a student’s growing years, as they spend most of their valued time in school. Often inadvertently schools instill basic values in students such as Punctuality, Cleanliness etc.
Firstly, schools often have their own sets of rules and regulations that students must obey. They have a fixed timing, fixed schedule for teaching subjects, co-curricular activities, examinations. These events often help students them to plan their day, starting by waking up early in the morning, getting ready on time, and finishing their homework the day before. As students often make friends and socialize, they develop good values such as sharing, staying clean, maintaining hygiene etc. Such values help students to become responsible adults.
Schools are also better equipped in teaching values as teachers are well trained and often have good relations with students. Teachers teach reading, math’s, history, geography that help building knowledge in students. They also have knowledge and expertise of teaching values in different ways which students easily grasp. For e.g. they often arrange activities that help in team building, take students for educational movies that help them understand history and culture in a better and more fun way , have story telling sessions where they teach what is good and bad for students. Thus these factors prepare students for life outside school.
If students are not taught these values in school where else would they learn them? Parents often are busy in working and doing other activities that they do not often get time to spend with their children. Also some parents do teach values but do not behave the same way. For e.g. A parent teaches their kids to be polite and respectful to others, but the same parents when someone is crossing the road in traffic or when a driver cuts them off, often argue and have fights with them or after work they often have phone calls and discussion with their coworker where they shout and don’t maintain decorum. This creates a bad influence on children when they don’t see their parents practicing what they preach.
To conclude schools are best equipped in teaching both social and ethical values, as they create a positive impact on students. The values they instill in them form the backbone which helps them build strong perspectives and help them them achieve their goals in life.
