Re: The remainder when 120 is divided by single-digit integer m [#permalink]

The key clue here is that we're dealing with a single-digit number and that the remainder is positive. Discovering this requires close evaluation of the question.

This heavily narrows down our options. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 will all yield a remainder of 0 because they are all factors of 120. This leaves us with 7 and 9.

Subtracting the lesser from the greater, we get 2. When we divide 120 by 2, our remainder is 0.

Hence, our answer is 0.

Neat question.
Notice the restrictions - m and n must be digits.
Therefore, m and n can take values from 1 to 9, inclusive.
0 is excluded, as we are dividing.
120 can be divided by 1,2,3,4,5, 6 and 8.
As we know that the remainder is positive, m and n cannot be any of those values.
as m>n, m must be 9 and n must be 7.
Therefore, m-n=2, which leaves no remainder when dividing by 120. 0 is the correct answer.
