As I read, I automatically filled in the blanks with my own words:
Quote:
According to Lackmuller’s latest screed, published under the title Why We Can’t Win at Their Game, special interest groups not nominally tied to ecological concerns have become so __(mired in)__ the process of environmental policymaking that those groups who actually aim to ensure that corporate profit does not trump environmental health have been effectively _(destroyed)____. Lackmuller’s contention, however, is __(incomplete)___ in that it fails to account for the signal achievements environmental groups have effected over the last twenty years — often to the chagrin of big business.
The idea of the first blank is that these special interest groups are tied to ecological concerns, and now have a heavy influence in environmental policymaking. C works best for that meaning.
These groups are now so involved in policy making that other groups are being pushed out, or squelched.
The last sentence tells us, though, that this is essentially false. Environmental groups, far from being squelched, have made great gains. Lackmuller's contention wasn't entirely accurate, then, and was actually misleading.
