Re: The Uruguay round hoped to expand the range of issues that came under [#permalink]

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

The first sentence of the text provides the clue to the missing word in blank 1 . The words 'under the purview' suggest that 'its fold' best fits in blank 1. The first sentence of the text lists the various issues to be brought under the fold of GATT and this suggests that the Uruguay round turned out to be the most comprehensive one. Thus 'most far-reaching' is apt in blank 2. From the last sentence of the text, it can be understood that a few member countries refused to sign the deal unless the reason behind giving an exceptional status to agriculture is made clear. Thus, 'glaring exception' best fits in blank 3. Thus, the answer is A, D, G.

Since the passage talks about trade negotiations and the Uruguay round hoped to expand the range of issues that came under the purview of GATT, the correct choice is its fold. Though the aegis is tempting, we must understand that to be under the aegis is to be under its protection. But no such meaning or sense is intended here. Its only about bringing things under its purview. And nothing to suggest an investigation is underway and things have to be brought under the scanner either.

The last sentence alludes to the special status accorded to agriculture and the thought contrastor "but" suggests the opposite sense for the rest of the sentence. Hence glaring exception is the correct choice for the last blank, and nothing else fits correctly.

And since the special status accorded to agriculture in all earlier trade negotiations is to be suitably addressed and rectified, this round would turn out to be the
most far-reaching trade agreement related to agricultural produce.

The correct choices are A,D,G.
