Re: Ragtime is a musical form that synthesizes folk melodies and [#permalink]

22. It can be inferred from the passage that the essential nature of ragtime has been obscured by commentaries based on

The only portion of the passage where we have any form of criticism is the below:
"It has sometimes been charged that ragtime is mechanical"
So lets look at what follows that:
For instance, Wilfred Mellers comments, "rags 'were transferred to the pianola roll and, even if not played by a machine, should be played like a machine, with meticulous precision." However, there is no reason to assume that ragtime is inherently mechanical simply because commercial manufacturers applied a mechanical recording method to ragtime, the only way to record pianos at that date.

focus on "at that date"

So we can infer, criticism of Ragtime being "mechanical" was rooted in the way Ragtime was produced "at that time"

This option (A) the way ragtime music was first recorded - makes sense

Need explanation for question 23

23. Which of the following is most nearly analogous in source and artistic character to a ragtime composition as described in the passage?

First rephrase the question, we are being asked to find an option which is similar to ragtime composition wrt source and artistic character.

Next try to pre-think the characteristics of ragtime

From the passage we can glean the characteristics of ragtime:
1. It is about following pre-defined rules, "It arises from ragtime's following a well-defined form and obeying simple rules within that form."
2. Being done with precision "rags 'were transferred to the pianola roll and, even if not played by a machine, should be played like a machine, with meticulous precision."
and not to mention its source as folk tunes mentioned in 1st paragraph

Now with this pre-thinking, lets look at the options with the intent to match with the above characteristics:

(A) Symphonic music derived from complex jazz motifs
- not matching with the expected characteristic, in fact out-of-scope
(B) An experimental novel based on well-known cartoon characters
- not matching with the expected characteristic, in fact out-of-scope

(C) A dramatic production in which actor~ invent scenes and improvise lines
- not matching with the expected characteristic, in fact exact opposite (we need an analogy in which something/someone is following rules not improvising)

(D) A ballet whose disciplined choreography is based on folk-dance steps
- matches .. how ? hints "disciplined" "based on folk-dance", if these are not enough (which they should be) just imagine a ballet performer and the "precision" with which they perform

(E) A painting whose abstract shapes evoke familiar objects in a natural landscape
- - not matching with the expected characteristic, in fact out-of-scope

Had a same question. Thank you for explaining.

In D, it mentions the "early" reviewers accounts which also alludes to an earlier period. The reviewer's accounts was what led to the misinterpretation of the nature of Ragtime. So I chose D. Can you elaborate on why D is eliminated?

For question 23: we have to look for the correct source and the artistic characteristics with that of rags.
the battle is between B,D
and if we go by the source we can say that there source lies in the folk music and dance so D.
