I have a simple problem here:
A room is 12 ft wide, 18 ft long, and 9 ft high. How many yards of carpet would it take to cover the floor of the room?
I did 12 ft times 18 ft which gave me 216 ft. Then I converted from 216 ft to yards, which is 216 ft / 3 ft = 72 yards.
However, this answer was incorrect.
The correct approach is convert the 12 ft and 18 ft to yards first then multiply.
The correct answer is 24 yards.
Are there rules of converting? Did I approach the problem wrong which my initial method?
Why did my initial method did not give me the right answer?

Yards is a measure of length and area can be measured in yard square. So your answer is off by a factor of 3.
Area = feet * feet /9 = feet/3 * feet/3 = yard *yard.
