In 2008, sales stay the same. So they are 753.
Half of those sales is 376.5. These sales are directly due to the 75 that was invested in R&D in 2007.
So 376.5 is what percent greater than 75?
I'm pretty basic when it comes to calculating percents. I only use the two numbers. Since \(\frac{376.5}{75} = 5.02\), 376.5 is about 5 times 75, or 500% of 75. But we want to know the percent greater than 75. When we calculate percent greater, we include the original number. This is why making a number 10% greater increases it, but taking 10% of a number decreases it. Percent of does not include the original number.
All this to say that of the 500% we calculated, 100% of it is the original number. The remaining 400% is the increase. So 376.5 is about 400% greater than 75. If we start with 75, we have to add 400% of 75 to get to 376.5. Choice D is the answer.
