The ostensible cause of health complications is the IV therapy, the specific culprit being excess concentrations of sodium and potassium. Once the concentration of sodium and potassium is lowered, however, nothing changes. Thus, we’re looking for an alternative cause to the high rate of health complications. (D) nicely provides this; the cause is nothing more than old age, i.e., those who are older are likely to have more health complications. (A), (C), and (E) are out of scope. (B) is tempting, but remember the paragraph says that sodium and potassium levels were returned to correct levels. (B) only refers to extremely low levels.
