Re: The recent change to all-volunteer armed forces in the Unite [#permalink]

17. The primary purpose is, as expected, introduced in the first sentence. The number of women in the armed forces will increase, yes, but the push toward equality will not be as dramatic as some would like. This is a prognosis, or a prediction for the future. The passage tells us how, in the future, women will be granted greater roles, but not roles equivalent to those of men.

18. The passage mentions that "women are unlikely to be trained for any direct combat operations." Combat, then, will remain the domain of men. Therefore, women will not be assigned all of the military tasks that are assigned to men.

19. The very first statement contains this answer: "The recent change to all-volunteer armed forces in the United States will eventually produce a gradual increase in the proportion of women in the armed forces and in the variety of women's assignments." So, the all-volunteer nature of the present armed forces will promote more women in the military, that is, a more equitable representation of women in the military.

20. Some people will expect women to have a role in the military more equal to men. Why will that not be the case? Because much of society is uncomfortable with this idea of women on the front lines fighting men. This attitude, then, prevents larger gains for women. In other words, it is the reason the dramatic gains will not be realized.

Hi, in Question 18, "women are unlikely to be trained for any direct combat operations." In where you can imply if combat operation is not trained for women, then it is trained for men? Are there any possibilities it is not trained for neither gender?

This is so even though the armed forces operate in an ethos of institutional change oriented toward occupational equality and under the federal sanction of equal pay for equal work.
I can not understand the meaning of this sentence. What is the meaning of so even though?

Carcass Can E be a contender for the 17th question , i got confused between B and E and then went on to mark E . My understanding is that the author emphasis use of functional equivalence as a substitute for occupational equality, in the passage as women will not receive the gains they were expecting of.

Can E be an answer if the question was primary concern?

That's a GREAT question to ask

(B) present a reasoned prognosis of the status of women in the new United States all-volunteer armed forces

This is the main idea. We look at the passage and frame the de-facto situation in that precise moment. Like a photography. Considering also that the short passage are under certain aspects the most difficult to tackle because they has NOT a real structure that we might apply in the LONG reading

(E) analyze the use of functional equivalence as a substitute for occupational equality in the new United States all-volunteer armed forces

The red portion is true also and catches the essence of the passage. However, the problem is in the first part: analyze the use

We are NOT analyze and even less we have a USE of it in the passage. We are witness of this disparity BUT we do not have a USE of it in the passage

Hope this helps
