The recent change to all-volunteer armed forces in the United States will eventually produce a gradual increase in the proportion of women in the armed forces and in the variety of women's assignments, but probably not the dramatic gains for women that might have been expected. This is so even though the armed forces operate in an ethos of institutional change oriented toward occupational equality and under the federal sanction of equal pay for equal work. The difficulty is that women are unlikely to be trained for any direct combat operations. A significant portion of the larger society remains uncomfortable as yet with extending equality in this direction. Therefore, for women in the military, the search for equality will still be based on functional equivalence, not identity or even similarity of task. Opportunities seem certain to arise. The growing emphasis on deterrence is bound to offer increasing scope for women to become involved in novel types of noncombat military assignments.

17. The primary purpose is, as expected, introduced in the first sentence. The number of women in the armed forces will increase, yes, but the push toward equality will not be as dramatic as some would like. This is a prognosis, or a prediction for the future. The passage tells us how, in the future, women will be granted greater roles, but not roles equivalent to those of men.
18. The passage mentions that "women are unlikely to be trained for any direct combat operations." Combat, then, will remain the domain of men. Therefore, women will not be assigned all of the military tasks that are assigned to men.
19. The very first statement contains this answer: "The recent change to all-volunteer armed forces in the United States will eventually produce a gradual increase in the proportion of women in the armed forces and in the variety of women's assignments." So, the all-volunteer nature of the present armed forces will promote more women in the military, that is, a more equitable representation of women in the military.
20. Some people will expect women to have a role in the military more equal to men. Why will that not be the case? Because much of society is uncomfortable with this idea of women on the front lines fighting men. This attitude, then, prevents larger gains for women. In other words, it is the reason the dramatic gains will not be realized.

Question - 17 - The primary purpose of the passage is to
The paragraph begins with a prediction of the proportion of women and the varieties of assignments they will be given in the future in an all-volunteer armed force, along with a caveat that dramatic gains should not be expected. And then reasons for this state of affairs is given.
Thus, Choice B is the correct answer.
(B) present a reasoned prognosis of the status of women in the new United States all-volunteer armed forces. Prognosis = a forecast of the likely outcome of a situation.
Question - 18 - According to the passage, despite the United States armed forces' commitment to occupational equality for women in the military, certain other factors preclude women's
The passage states that despite the commitment to occupational equality, women are not likely to be trained for direct combat operations. The reason for this is that a significant portion of the larger society remains uncomfortable as yet with giving women this role (certain other factors mentioned in the question).
Thus Choice E is the correct answer.
(E) being assigned all of the military tasks that are assigned to men
Question - 19 - The passage implies that which of the following is a factor conducive to a more equitable representation of women in the United States armed forces than has existed in the past?
The recent change to all-volunteer armed forces in the United States will eventually produce a gradual increase in the proportion of womenin the armed forces and in the variety of women's assignments
Thus, it is the change to an all-volunteer armed forces which did not happen until recently that will enable a more equitable representation of women.
Thus Choice A is the correct answer.
(A) The all-volunteer character of the present armed forces
Question - 20 - The "dramatic gains for women" and the attitude of a "significant portion of the larger society" are logically related to each other inasmuch as the author puts forward the latter as
The passage states that a significant portion of the larger society remains uncomfortable with allowing women to take part in direct combat operations. And this was preventing dramatic gains for women that might have been expected. Choice B which states "the major reason for absence of the former" correctly captures the view of the author, and is thus the correct answer. Choice C is going to an extreme when it states that the attitude of the significant portion of the larger society is a precondition for any prospect of achieving the former.
Thus Choice B is the correct answer.
(A) a public response to achievement of the former - WRONG. the author does not state this in the passage anywhere. (B) the major reason for absence of the former - CORRECT. (C) a precondition for any prospect of achieving the former - WRONG - extreme view - to state that the latter is a precondition for any prospect (D) a catalyst for a further extension of the former - WRONG. - the exact opposite (E) a reason for some of the former being lost again - WRONG - The word "again" seems to imply that the former was lost once before - no evidence in the passage.

Carcass Can E be a contender for the 17th question , i got confused between B and E and then went on to mark E . My understanding is that the author emphasis use of functional equivalence as a substitute for occupational equality, in the passage as women will not receive the gains they were expecting of.
Can E be an answer if the question was primary concern?
That's a GREAT question to ask
(B) present a reasoned prognosis of the status of women in the new United States all-volunteer armed forces
This is the main idea. We look at the passage and frame the de-facto situation in that precise moment. Like a photography. Considering also that the short passage are under certain aspects the most difficult to tackle because they has NOT a real structure that we might apply in the LONG reading
(E) analyze the use of functional equivalence as a substitute for occupational equality in the new United States all-volunteer armed forces
The red portion is true also and catches the essence of the passage. However, the problem is in the first part: analyze the use
We are NOT analyze and even less we have a USE of it in the passage. We are witness of this disparity BUT we do not have a USE of it in the passage

Hi, in Question 18, "women are unlikely to be trained for any direct combat operations." In where you can imply if combat operation is not trained for women, then it is trained for men? Are there any possibilities it is not trained for neither gender?

This is so even though the armed forces operate in an ethos of institutional change oriented toward occupational equality and under the federal sanction of equal pay for equal work. I can not understand the meaning of this sentence. What is the meaning of so even though?
