Answer: A
A certain punch is created by mixing two parts soda and three parts ice cream. The soda is 4 parts sugar, 5 parts citric acid, and 11 parts other ingredients. The ice cream is 3 parts sugar, 2 parts citric acid, and 15 parts other ingredients.

Punch = 2 * soda + 3 * ice-cream
Soda = 4 * sugar + 5 * citric-acid + 11 * other
Ice-cream = 3 * sugar + 2 * citric-acid + 15 * other

Punch = Punch = 2 * soda + 3 * ice-cream = 2 * (4 * sugar + 5 * citric-acid + 11 * other) + 5 * (3 * sugar + 2 * citric-acid + 15 * other) = 23 * sugar + 20 * citric-acid + 97 * other

Punch = 23 * sugar + 20 * citric-acid + 97 * other
As the part is a unique unit, there is more sugar than citric-acid.

Solution involves multiplying fractions with frations and adding them. When the denominators are same for 2 fractions, adding is easy, add the numerators and put the denominator same.

Also when comparing 2 fractions with same denominator, the one with greater numerator is bigger fraction. Knowing this concept would save time and we dont need a calculator.

Answer A is correct.

You have to calculate:
2 soda * 4 sugar = 8
2 soda * 5 CA = 10

3 ice cream * 3 sugar = 9
3 ice cream * 2 CA = 6

Total sugar: 17
Total CA: 16

Thank you for your explanation Sir.

However, it should be in text as a reply to the discussion and NOT as an attachment.

it is easier to understand.

Re: A certain punch is created by mixing two parts soda and thre [#permalink]
Carcass this is how I went about solving
since the punch contains 2/5 soda and 1 unit soda has 4 unit sugar then 2 unit soda will have 8 sugar
the punch also contains 3/5 ice cream and 1 unit ice cream has 3 unit sugar so 3 unit ice cream will have 9 unit sugar
so total sugar will be 17
same way citrus can be calculated, 1 unit soda has 5 unit citrus then 2 unit soda will have 10 citrus
1 unit ice cream has 2 citrus then 3 parts ice cream will have 6 citrus
so total citrus will be 16
A is bigger
Initially i was not able to do the question but experimented with this approach, even tho the answer is correct but I am not sure if its just co-incidence or my method of solving is correct do let me know if my solving has any error/mistake feedback would be great help for me.
