Anyone please explain meaning to this sentence "But to say the prose of Lolita and Speak, Memory would not have coalesced into their current incarnations had Nabokov’s hobby been, say, lawn tennis is simply reaching too far"

You cannot understand that sentence if you did not get the gist of the entire passage. It is just a metaphor for what is stated BEFORE in the passage: that is true Vladimir Nabokov was a genius contaminating both of the two worlds in which he was engaged: scientist and author at the same time. And Temoshotka tries to demonstrate his theory.

However, her job is far-fetched. It is well constructed but does not hold that much.

And then we have the last sentence that shows all that is said above.

Translating literally has little sense.

in a nutshell, it says the following: in the prose of Lolita and Speak says that the two would not be fused together WITHOUT the experience or skills Nabokov had with his hobby (lawn on green) is way far from the truth.

To sum up the concept: Nabokov liked the contamination of both worlds where he was engaged but this mix is not evident and credible as Temoshotka wants us believe in

IMO neither of the questions were straightforward. What worked for me was focussing attention of each and every word of the options.

For Q1 .

The primary purpose of the passage is

A. to analyze several conflicting interpretations of an author’s work - The passage doesn't mention several conflicting interpretations; it presents one very common interpretation and an opposing view point that he/she refutes.
B. champion a specific interpretation of a writer’s work - I discarded this because I felt the author's intention was not to champion the most common interpretation. It seemed the author presented that to provide context, and dedicated the passage to present and refute Temoshotka's interpretation.
C. challenge a common understanding of a well-known writer - The common understanding was that the skills as an author and as a scientist were different; the author doesn't challange this interpretation.
D. applaud an undertaking but question the validity of its claims - Yes. The authors uses the word "bold", but says that Temoshotks has taken it too far.
E. support a claim regarding an author’s creative process but doubt the extent of that claim Test Question - This was tricky. I discarded this option because of the word "creative process" . The author doesn't focus on Nabokov's creative process as an author and as a scientist, but on the final product itself.

For Q.2 . I focussed on simplifying each option and see if the passage supports it.

According to the author of the passage, Temoshotka, in her estimation of Nabokov, does which of the following?

Select all that apply.

A. Reconcile two antagonistic tendencies that coexisted in the author - There aren't any antagonistic tendencies that the author has. Yes, the passage presents two views about Nabokov's skills, but there's isn't any evidence in the passage to conclude that these two views are antagonistic.
B. Make a claim without providing any evidence to this claim - Temoshotka does present an evidence to support her claim about Nabokov's work. So, can't be the answer. I don't think we need to infer anything here. Temoshotka's evidence is mentioned in the passage. Hence, wrong.
C. Present a thesis that while at points is valid is also overly ambitious - Yes. Author gives some credit to Temoshotka's assertion, but states that he takes in too far. So. only C.
