Without ever declaring war, the world has been engaged in a [#permalink]

Hi,

Que 2 is an inference question.

(A) certain sediments and fishing techniques are mainly responsible for the loss of Earth’s coral reefs. - Mainly is an extreme. We are given 2-3 other reasons as well.

(B) approximately one third of Earth’s coral reefs remain in pristine condition. - We do not know for sure that the remaining one third are in pristine condition.

(C) approximately one quarter of Earth’s coral reefs are irretrievably lost. - This we can infer from Approximately one-quarter of them have fallen a permanent casualty to modern assault weapons. permanent casualty so cannot be retrievable.

(D) two thirds of Earth’s coral reefs lack the necessary defenses against pollution and other assaults. - Out of scope

(E) the undeclared war against coral reefs has been more destructive than many declared wars have been. - Out of scope

corals eject the mutualistic and photosynthesizing algae called zooxanthellae, with which they exchange benefits and upon which their very existence relies.

(A) the loss of zooxanthellae upsets the delicate balance of reef ecosystems.
(B) zooxanthellae exist only to ensure the existence of coral.
(C) coral and zooxanthellae are interdependent organisms.
(D) zooxanthellae are the only source of defenses against external assault.
(E) zooxanthellae provide protection against certain types of harmful sediment.

C is the answer

Without ever declaring war, the world has been engaged in a pitched battle against coral reefs. From coral reefs that have been destroyed as a result of fishing with dynamite to coral reefs blanketed by and suffocating from sediment, fully two- thirds of these crucial ecosystems are under siege around the world.

The author mentions the destruction of coral reefs to the war as it is discussed in the passage that it is a matter of concern. Later in the passage the author discusses that the situation is really bad. Hence option A is correct.

A) illustrate the degree of destruction and the gravity of the problem facing coral reefs.

Please ask if the doubt remains.

For question 3:
Option choice A: too broad the ecosystem also contains fish and fishing also upsets the delicate balance of life
Option choice B: here only is the keyword they are mutualistic so incorrect
Option choice C: this can be an answer so skip
Option choice D: here also only is the keyword only is too extreme to say to probably not correct
Option choice E: the argument is correct but this is not the main reason for them to exist and so not neccesary

So C is the answer
