How to Get STRONG Letters of Recommendation

Graduate school has become especially competitive, and when the Admissions Committee is looking through sometimes hundreds of application packages to find the dozen or so people to select, it places huge importance on letters of recommendation. For grad school, AdComs are usually staffed by professors (and sometimes grad students too), and they respect the assessments of colleagues when attempting to figure out whether a candidate will thrive in their program and be a good fit.

As such, it's vital that applicants take a thoughtful approach to selecting their recommenders, providing them with the information they need, and otherwise working to ensure that their letter writers feel invested -and even enthusiastic- about helping.
